The Doug Firs Adult Homesteading Class
Think farm camp for adults! But so much more! Farming, gardening, and homesteading skills are learned over a lifetime, and best learned by doing! Homesteading is defined by the seasons, and each aspect of a life lived on the land is best learned with laughter and community!
Fall Session starts September 7th and runs through November 1st.
You are invited to come to one, two, or all three sessions during the week. Class times are Sunday 1-5/Monday 10-2/Monday 3-7/ (with an optional Thursday morning/evening class for rescheduling/make up time)
If you are curious about how food is grown, and how the things we use in daily life are made, then this class is for you!
If you are craving community and connection, then here we are!
If you have been longing for the simplicity and richness that comes from eating meals that you helped grow, weaving baskets from materials you have harvested, tanning hides with bark you helped gather, and making soap from natural materials from the farm, then you have found your place.
Each week of our 8 week session will cover seasonal topics happening on the farm, and offer 3 opportunities during the week to learn hands on skills.
Topics will include:
-Organic gardening and year round food production,
- Food forest and orchard set up and care,
-Raising livestock for eggs, meat and milk,
-Fencing solutions for the farm, including rotational grazing practices and using livestock for blackberry control,
-Canning, pickling, fermenting, and food preservation,
-Harvesting wild plants for tea and medicinal uses,
- Making salves, soaps, and teas from plants,
-Basic carpentry, electric, and plumbing,
-Hide tanning, basketry, felting, and other farm crafts,
…whatever is happening on the homestead you will learn by doing it!
This class will also offer readings and discussions about food, farming, nutrition compiled from my many years of teaching and learning about traditional wisdoms and knowledge, the history of the food culture, and how-to farm know how.
This class is all about fostering joy, belonging, and meaning while learning valuable skills that connect us to food, place, and community. Weather your dream is to own property and farm or homestead and need a place to start, or you are just curious about how the world is knit together and want to share in the excitement of the farm, this class is for you!
A one of a kind opportunity for adults, everyone is welcome here!
